This statement calls for safety and security for all, in the spirit of the Ayuuk.
We are currently engaged in mediation-inclusive discussions aimed at establishing a long-term relationship based on co-existence, collaboration, and transparent communication.
On May 28, 2024, we participated in a sacred cultural event that binds us to peaceful and respectful dialogue, in a ceremony conducted in accordance with the Ayuuk of both Nations.
As we work through the mediation, we are faced with sensitive and challenging conversations. We will ensure that we receive these conversations respectfully and calmly.
The role of the Simgigat and Sigidimhaanak is paramount in providing guidance to the process through their reflections on our Ayuuk.
The safety and well-being of all participants during these discussions is paramount. We are committed to developing protocols based on traditional dispute resolution mechanisms to address issues that arise.
Protocols may include the participants jointly calling upon their “Wilksilaks” a father clan member from each Wilp present to witness.
As Simgigat/Sigidimhaanak and leaders, we commit to being respectful, even when we do not agree on issues. We call on our representatives to conduct themselves in accordance with our Ayuuk and, on the mediators for support when required.
We encourage our citizens to abstain from unsafe and threatening conduct, for example, physical altercations, verbal harassment, intimidation, and threats directed at one another, whether on the lands, on the water, or on online social media platforms.
We will instruct our Citizens not to engage in such behaviors and de-escalate situations when they arise. We will instruct our members to bring their solutions to us directly so that we can address them in accordance with the Ayuuk.
When members have incidences or concerns, they wish to bring to leadership’s attention, please prepare a summary including dates, times, relevant details and any photos or videos.
If the incident occurs on the land between citizens, reference will be sent to the respective Simgigat and Sigidimhaanak of both parties, and copied to their Wilp, to address the matter in accordance with our Ayuuk.
Then send your summary to either:
- Andrew Robinson, CEO, Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government: andrewr@nisgaanation.ca
- Joel Starlund, Executive Director, Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs: e.d@gitanyowchiefs.co
- Huwilp members for Traditional Dispute Resolution Process
- Jennifer Melles, BC: Jennifer.Melles@gov.bc.ca
Once your summary has been received, the Parties will initiate a small working group to discuss the appropriate manner to address your report.
We hereby affirm our commitment to these principles and agree to consistently remind our citizens and Wilp members of the need for safe spaces.
Thank you to all Gitanyow and Nisg̱a’a Nation members for adhering to the spirit and intent of this letter, this mediation, and honouring our Ayuuk together.
Glen Williams, Malii, President – Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs
Eva Clayton, President – Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government
