Due to current and forecasted weather conditions, Category 1 campfire prohibition will be put into effect for the Nisga’a Lands.
NLG LANDS DIRECTOR – Effective at 12:00 (noon) Pacific Daylight Time on Friday, July 19, 2024, Category 1 campfires will be prohibited across the Nisga’a Lands.
This campfire prohibition will prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.
Specifically, prohibited activities that would constitute a Category 1 campfire which include;
- Burns material in one pile no larger than 0.5 metre in height and 0.5 metre in width, and
- Is lit, fueled or used
- By any person for a recreational purpose, or
- By a First Nation for a ceremonial purpose.
In addition to open fires prohibited, the following activities and equipment are also restricted.
- Fireworks, including firecrackers,
- Sky lanterns,
- Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description,
- Binary exploding targets,
- Air curtain burners,
- Tiki and similar kind of torches, and
- Chimineas.
This prohibition does not include the use of outdoor stoves. As per the Wildfire Regulations, an outdoor stove is a CSA-rated or ULC-rated device used outdoors for cooking, heat or ambiance that burns charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, and has a flame height that is less than 15 centimeters tall.
The prohibition does not apply within the village lands boundaries serviced by a volunteer fire department. This prohibition will remain in place until 12:00 (noon), September 15, 2024, or until the public is otherwise notified.
