Nisg̱a’a Nation Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit is now Operational in Marine Search and Rescue – June 26, 2024

Nisg̱a’a, BC, June 26th, 2024 – The Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary (CN- CGA) is pleased to announce that the Nisg̱a’a Nation search and rescue (SAR) unit is now operational and ready to undertake marine missions. This achievement follows extensive training and preparation and marks a significant advancement in enhancing maritime safety in the region.

The announcement was made at a traditional community feast in Laxgalts’ap on June 7th, 2024. The event was attended by Dawn Wilson, Chief Executive Officer of CN-CGA; Alex Baildham, Manager of Training and Operations of CN-CGA; Juliana Sarmiento, Project Manager of CN-CGA; Krystal Aikman; Acting Deputy Superintendent of Search and Rescue, Western Region, Canadian Coast Guard, as well as Nisg̱a’a Hereditary Chief, community members, a children’s dance group, and CN-CGA crew members, who celebrated this momentous occasion.

At the community feast, Anthony Moore, the CN-CGA Board Member from Nisg̱a’a Nation and Vice President of CN-CGA, was acknowledged for his invaluable contributions to the organization and the SAR unit. His leadership and dedication have been crucial in achieving this operational status. Additionally, the current Zone Coordinator, Errol Nyce, along with the previous Zone Coordinator, Aiden Clayton, were recognized for training excellence, with the rest of the SAR unit held in high esteem with certificates of recognition.

Dawn Wilson added – “The Nisg̱a’a unit has earned this operational status despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 period. Anthony Moore has done a tremendous job throughout this lengthy process, ensuring his team continued training and honing their skills. The feast was also incredibly special, the dance group was phenomenal, and the singers really did bring transcendence to the guests.”

The Nisg̱a’a CN-CGA SAR unit is now on call to support the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) for marine search and rescue operations, assisting mariners in distress. This collaboration underscores the Nisga’a Nation’s commitment to maritime safety and their sovereignty, allowing them to operate their SAR unit in their unique way.

The Nisg̱a’a SAR unit will collaborate closely with local stakeholders, including the Canadian Coast Guard, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR) and neighbouring Nations, to ensure that common safety goals are met. This collaborative approach enhances regional SAR capabilities and strengthens ties within the maritime community.

Mariners are reminded to activate the SAR system using Channel 16 on the VHF radio. This channel is monitored 24/7 and serves as the primary means of communication for emergency assistance.
