POSITION: Supported Child Development Consultant/Worker

SUPERVISOR: Family Support Services Manager

HOURS: 35 hours per week | TERM: Full-Time or part time for student enrolled in relevant education | LOCATION: New Aiyansh, BC

JOB SUMMARY:
The program assists families with children that may have a developmental delay or extra support needs. Consultant / Worker collaborates and works with Head Start / Day Care programs and their families to develop inclusive principles and practices to enhance children’s experience and development, with strong cultural focus. The SCD Consultant/ Worker primary functions is to identify appropriate and individualized plan of care for the child and caregiver. This capacity will also provide mentorship and support to co-workers. Travel to the four villages will be required.

DUTIES:

  • Conduct informal and formal child and family assessments using a variety of culturally sensitive methods and testing techniques;
  • Identify risk categories and corresponding domains (gross and fine motor, social and emotional, language and cognitive) where developmental delay is or is at risk of occurring in the child;
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of an individual service plan for children with support and agreement from their families and care givers; Assist families and child care givers to identify the potential developmental risk or delays in children; Solicit agreement and support from the families and caregivers of children requiring interventions;
  • To develop culturally appropriate individual child intervention plans with families and childcare service providers.
  • Ensure the coordination of specialized services; medical, social, educational or other, through joint intervention plan development and frequent case conferencing with those professionals;
  • Responsible to review and evaluate children’s response and progress to service interventions and make adjustment, when necessary in collaboration with involved community professional and the child’s family/extended family;
  • Analyze, assess and identify the need for other professionals specializing in specific infant development roles, function and services as may be required by the child; Provide information and education to care giver agencies, coworkers and Nisga’a communities regarding the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of child developmental delays and associated physical, mental and emotional conditions.
  • Determine eligibility and levels of support that the service can provide;
  • Responsible to conduct developmental screening and assessments. Assist families in selecting appropriate child care settings of their choice;
  • Coordinate services to ensure the best supports are being provided for the child and their family;
  • Required to complete internal and external reporting;
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and manage a complex workload;
  • Knowledge of Nisga’a cultural practices, ceremonies, values and beliefs;
  • Knowledge of all areas of child development;

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE:

  • Early Childhood Education Diploma or related degree and/or ECE Certificate and Special Needs Certificate; or proof of relevant certification or enrollment in similar or relevant field of study
  • Minimum 2 years employment in a child care setting;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to develop and maintain a warm, caring, responsive relationship with the child.
  • Ability to establish and maintain supportive, collaborative relationships with families and setting staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to maintain a positive, professional, non-judgmental attitude
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position

OTHER:

  • 3 recent work related references will be required;
  • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License with current abstract
