As a Local Authority, NLG participates in the provincial emergency management system in BC, and coordinates at the regional and provincial level with BC.
NLG has enacted the Nisg̱a’a Emergency Program Act which sets out the respective structure and activities of NLG and the four Nisg̱a’a Village Governments in respect of emergency management.
As required by the Nisg̱a’a Emergency Program Act, NLG Executive adopted the attached “Nisg̱a’a Emergency Management Plan—a Strategic Guide for Site Support to Major Emergencies and Disasters.”
The Department of Emergency Response Services (ERS) follows four pillars of emergency management to help the Nisg̱a’a Villages before, during, and after a crisis. These include: prevention, preparedness, mitigation, and response. ERS is responsible for ensuring that NLG is ready to respond to any event or emergency that threatens the safety and security of Nisg̱a’a citizens, its own organization, infrastructure, and employees. It has the capability and capacity to:
- identify the risks related to critical infrastructure;
- prepare emergency management plans in respect to those risks;
- maintain, test, and implement those plans; and
- conduct exercises and training.
ERS is also responsible for:
- Emergency Management in an Emergency Operation Centre and/or incident command post;
- Nisg̱a’a Emergency Health Transportation Program;
- Marine Environmental Spill Response;
- Structure Fire Services and support;
- Land Environmental Spill Response;
- Nisg̱a’a Ground Search and Rescue;
- Nisg̱a’a Marine Search and Rescue;
- Climate Change and Adaptation;
- Wildland Fire Services and Wildland Urban Interface; and
- Development of next generation 911 service on Nisg̱a’a Lands.
The four Nisg̱a’a Village Governments have also developed plans to guide their response.
The Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government is the Local Authority for the Nisg̱a’a Nation within the parameters of Provincial legislation in respect of emergency preparedness and emergency measures.
Emergency Management BC protects and improves public safety in B.C. by providing advisories of active emergencies, disaster readiness and recovery, fire safety and death investigation.
