Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl
Nisg̱a’a Institute
Since 1993, Wilp Wilx̱o’oskwhl Nisg̱a’a Institute (WWNI) has worked in three areas: academic, vocational and technical, and continuing education, with each leading to a certificate, diploma, or degree. Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts programs are delivered under a federated agreement with the University of Northern British Columbia.
The Nisg̱a’a Nation’s right to make laws in respect of post-secondary education within Nisg̱a’a Lands is spelled out in the Nisg̱a’a Final Agreement (2000). In 2004, the Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government unanimously enacted the Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisg̱a’a Institute Act with the mandate as a Nisg̱a’a post-secondary education institution “to award certificates, diplomas, and degrees in its own right for the courses and programs it offers Nisg̱a’a citizens and others,” including “the accreditation and certification of individuals who teach or research Nisg̱a’a language and culture” (Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisg̱a’a Institute Act, NLGSR 2004, c. P-2).
WWNI’s mission is to provide access to quality learning for Nisg̱a’a citizens where they live or work. WWNI partners with other post-secondary institutions to offer joint delivery of certified programs, including Nisg̱a’a Language and Culture, both in-person and virtually. Students and graduates move on to other areas of study, including Education, Social Work, and Law. WWNI also facilitates the Research Protocol on behalf of the Nisg̱a’a Nation, which guides internal and external researchers working with and learning from Nisg̱a’a knowledge holders.
