On November 1, 2024 the School District No. 92 (Nisg̱a’a) celebrated Unity Day and the 50 years of inception of the Nisg̱a’a School District. The district students, teachers, staff, simgigat, sigidimnaḵ’, Nisg̱a’a dancers and community members marched from the Gitmidiik Auditorium to the Unity Pole at Nisg̱a’a Elementary Secondary School (NESS). Then the SD 92 hosted a Unity Day Feast where the students seated and served guests in a Feast Hall setting.
Madame President Eva Clayton was among a few guest speakers who spoke about the brief history of Unity Day and the importance of education.
The Pts’aanim Sayt K’il̓im G̱oothl Ḵ’alii Aks (Nisg̱a’a Unity Pole) was erected on November 1, 1977. The Unity Pole was carved by Master Carver wahlin W̓ii Gadim X̱sgaak – the late Eli Gosnell. His apprentices were the late Joseph Gosnell Sr., the late George Gosnell and Jacob Nyce. The Unity Pole was carved to symbolize the long hard struggle that the Nisg̱a’a have endured in attaining equal opportunities in education and negotiating their Land Claim Settlement. It took 100 men to raise the Unity Pole.
We must continue to take pride in the four schools within the School District No. 92. We commend the positive work that the teachers, staff and students continue to do. Aamhl jabin!
K’alii-Aksim-Lisims, the Nass River, flows through a land of sacred mountains and dense forests on Canada’s Pacific Coast. The Nisg̱a’a people have lived in the Nass River Valley since before recorded time.
The Nisg̱a’a Final Agreement, British Columbia’s first modern treaty, recognizes Nisg̱a’a Lands and Nisg̱a’a Government. An example of hope, trust, and cooperation, the Nisg̱a’a Final Agreement is being studied by governments and Indigenous people the world over.
